Car seat
The seat of a modern car is a complex technical system designed to ensure the comfort and safety of the driver and passengers. The design of the seats is constantly being improved. For more insights jump to: how to move power car seat without power
The main structural elements of a car seat are the frame, cushion and backrest.
The frame serves as the seat base. It is manufactured from high strength steel. Longitudinal movement of the seat frame along special guides is provided. Moving can be carried out manually or using an electric drive. The frame accommodates the seat cushion and backrest.
The seat cushion has a special shape that prevents a person from slipping under the seat belts during hard braking. The seat back is pivotally connected to the cushion. The back can be either one-piece or composite. The height of the backrest is proportional to the size of the average person, thus providing the best support for the shoulders. There are side bolsters on the pillow and backrest, which provide a snug fit for a person.
The seat cushion and backrest have a layered structure. Springs are placed on the frame, which are covered with a foamed filler - polyurethane foam. Upholstery covers the top of the seat. Various materials are used as upholstery: fabric (upholstery, velor, etc.), artificial leather (vinyl, alcantara, etc.), genuine leather.
Seat upholstery is made of both homogeneous and combined materials (various fabrics, fabric - genuine leather, Alcantara - genuine leather, etc.). Most seats are made from durable, inexpensive upholstery fabric.
The car seat can have various position adjustments:
• longitudinal movement;
• vertical movement;
• backrest angle;
• the angle of inclination of the upper part of the back ( for compound backs );
• the angle of the pillow;
• departure of the pillow;
• height and reach of lumbar support;
• the amount of lateral support;
• folding the seats ( including the front passenger seat ).
Seat adjustments can be mechanical, electrical, pneumatic or combined (for example, pneumo-electric) drive. Mechanical adjustments are made with a lever or adjusting wheel, electrical (pneumatic) with a switch.
Some car seats have a function for saving adjustment changes (so-called memory seat ). The saved adjustments can be used later by pressing the corresponding switch or remotely. The function allows several drivers (usually two) to store their seating parameters. The seat adjustment memory is usually saved together with the settings for the outside rearview mirrors and the steering wheel position.

The lumbar support of the seats is designed to reduce the strain on the back muscles during movement. The lumbar support is a cushion located in the back of the seat. The roller can move in height and in the longitudinal direction.
Mercedes-Benz is at the forefront of the planet in terms of the construction of car seats. Its modern multi-contour seating is equipped with adjustable air chambers, which allows it to adapt the seating parameters in accordance with the individual anatomical characteristics of a person and his requirements for comfort.
The airbags are located under the seat upholstery and include side bolsters in the seat cushion, lumbar support, side bolsters in the back of the seat, and shoulder support. The regulation of the degree of filling of the air chambers is carried out using piezo valves included in the pneumatic system.
The piezo valves are also integrated into the Pre-Safe system , which automatically inflates the side bolsters of the seat as a safety measure in the event of a possible accident.
In multicontour seats, the degree of lateral support can be adjusted when turning. Depending on the steering angle, lateral acceleration and vehicle speed, the piezo air chamber valves regulate the pressure and air volume in the respective air chambers, thereby achieving better lateral support for the rider.
Additional structural elements can be installed on the car seat, providing riders with greater comfort and safety: headrest, armrest, heating system, ventilation system, massage system.
The list of additional seating equipment can vary significantly depending on the class and model of a particular car. There is a steady trend to equip budget car seats with additional functions.
